Man City youngster didn’t take opportunity to impress Guardiola v Sevilla [Opinion]

|

Manchester City rounded off their Champions League group campaign with a win, beating Sevilla 3-1 on Wednesday evening despite resting a number of first-team players. But while Pep Guardiola will be delighted that his younger starting eleven got a result, he may feel one or two players missed an opportunity to impress.

Cole Palmer is one player supporters have been clamouring to see more of, as he was outstanding at youth level and has been given cameo appearances this season by Pep Guardiola. But the 20-year-old was dwarfed in midfield by Phil Foden who caught the eye while the youngster wilted.

Palmer was City’s third-lowest ranked player in the squad on SofaScore (6.6) and didn’t manage to create a chance, register a shot on target, have a successful dribble or turn over the ball against Sevilla. Foden, however, had a 8.0 rating and had two shots on target, three chances created, two successful dribbles and turned over the ball once while winning three freekicks.

Palmer has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season but is yet to score or make an assist. He’s only been afforded 235 minutes of playing time across the board but will hope to make more of a telling impact when he does next feature in a game.
