Man City youngster has a ‘bright future’ despite poor performance [Opinion]

Manchester City enjoyed a 2-0 win over Chelsea in Wednesday’s EFL Cup third round, but Rico Lewis was one player who may not have enjoyed the game as he was given a torrid time by Lewis Hall.

The 17-year-old started at right-back in place of John Stones but didn’t lay a finger on Chelsea at the Etihad Stadium – 0 tackles, 0 interceptions, 0 clearances, 0 aerial duels won, 2 fouls, 0 chances created.

Nevertheless, Pep Guardiola was full of praise for Lewis after the game and says City plan to keep him in Manchester for the long-term. Lewis has faith from his manager even after a poor performance.

The 17-year-old has made six appearances in all competitions this season, scoring one goal and amassing 243 minutes of playing time. Lewis has now started an EFL Cup and Champions League match for City but has yet to be given the same treatment in the Premier League.

Lewis has Kyle Walker and Joao Cancelo for competition at right-back, while Manuel Akanji and John Stones can operate in the makeshift role, but Guardiola believes he has a bright future and will give him opportunities as much as possible.

He said to reporters: “He’s exceptional. He’s 17 years old, he was perfect against Chelsea… the future will be bright for Rico, I trust him for the future.” Next up for City is a clash with Brentford on Saturday, though it’s unlikely Lewis will get the nod.
