Manchester City confirmed the signing of Sergio Gomez from RSC Anderlecht on Tuesday, their fourth acquisition of the summer after Erling Haaland from Borussia Dortmund, Stefan Ortega from Arminia Bielefeld and Kalvin Phillips from Leeds United.
Kyle Walker may not be as thrilled about his arrival, however, as Gomez could eventually force him out of the starting lineup. Joao Cancelo has been Man City’s makeshift left-back since the 2021/22 campaign, but he could return to right-back if Gomez starts in his preferred position, meaning Walker could be sat out.

Gomez has just got his foot in the door and won’t be rushed into the starting eleven as City have enjoyed a winning start to the new season, but the long-term plan is for him to be Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko’s successor. He was Anderlecht’s Player of the Season, so it shouldn’t take him long to make the spot his own.
That means an existing player will have to make way for the Spaniard and Cancelo was outstanding in 2021/22 so he won’t be dropped. Walker, however, is in the eve of his career and is more expendable of the trio so his days in the team may be numbered. Gomez wasn’t signed to sit on the bench.

I want to see how Gomez will fight with higher strikers, and why Borna Sosa is not joined instead.. It might be the same as Zinchenko, good ball play support but not defence stand against best attackers Liverpool/Chelsea/Barca/PSG
Walker’s speed is a key element of City’s defence. As long as he maintains that speed he will be an important part of City’s defence.
