Manager given injury boost over Man City player, could feature in the World Cup

|

Kyle Walker is currently recovering from a groin injury and faces a race to be fit in time to represent England at the 2022 Qatar World Cup, but Sami Mokbel of the Daily Mail says the 32-year-old’s rehabilitation has encouraged the England camp.

Walker has been sidelined since early-October, missing three Premier League games and two Champions League outings, but England’s first World Cup group game is just over a month away. Gareth Southgate will name his provisional squad on October 20 before shortening it for the tournament.

Walker has made eight appearances in all competitions this season, amassing 653 minutes of football. The England international was a regular prior to his injury, so Pep Guardiola will be desperate to have him back – Joao Cancelo and Manuel Akanji have deputised for Walker with varying degrees of success.

The Daily Mail say Southgate is pleased that the 32-year-old is doing everything in his power to be fit for the World Cup, but Walker might miss England’s opening group game. He could be selected for future matches with the Three Lions expected to reach the knockout round, however.

City have seven games to play before the tournament begins – Brighton & Hove Albion (October 22), Borussia Dortmund (October 25), Leicester City (October 29), Sevilla (November 2), Fulham (November 5), Chelsea (November 9), Brentford (November 11), but it doesn’t seem likely Walker will feature in any of them.
