Report: Man City make decision on Benjamin Mendy and his potential £42m replacement

|

Benjamin Mendy’s future at Manchester City has been uncertain for the longest time after he lost his starting place under Pep Guardiola, but Goal say he won’t be sold this summer.

The 26-year-old has made 20 appearances in all competitions this season but has started only 11 Premier League games after falling behind Oleksandr Zinchenko in the pecking order.

Mendy picked up an injury at the start of the campaign and struggled for consistency when called upon, so it seemed he might be on the chopping block when City were linked with the likes of Alex Sandro, Nuno Mendes, David Alaba and Gabriel Gudmundsson.

Mendes was a player City were very keen on signing, but it doesn’t appear the £42m-rated defender will be approached this summer. Whether that opens the door to another club to sign him remains to be seen, but Pep Guardiola is content to continue with Mendy and Zinchenko next season.

The latter made 32 appearances across the board in 2020/21 and started in the Champions League semi-final second leg and final, so it’s clear he’s the first-choice left-back right now. Pre-season might give Mendy a chance to get his spot back.
