Man City dealt blow in pursuit of £36m Fernandinho replacement as PL rivals enter race

|

Manchester City have been dealt a blow in their pursuit of Denis Zakaria, as Chelsea and Manchester United have entered the race for his signature, say The Sun.

With Fernandinho expected to leave at the end of the season, we’re scouring the transfer market for potential replacements and Fabrizio Romano says we’re considering a move for the talented 24-year-old.

Unfortunately, we’re not the only ones…

Zakaria has made 99 appearances in all competitions for Borussia Monchengladbach since joining from BSC Young Boys in 2017, scoring eight goals with six assists. The Swiss international has spent most of the season out with a knee injury but recently returned to make three appearances in November.

The £36m-rated midfielder is highly-rated but still has two years remaining on his deal at Gladbach, so his club need not be in a major rush to sell. They can wait until the end of the season before making a decision on Zakaria’s future.

In 2019/20, the defensive-midfielder made 23 Bundesliga appearances, won 21 aerial duels, made 46 successful dribbles and averaged a tackle (49) or interception (37) every 23 minutes, so there’s no doubt over his quality. It just remains to be seen if we have to worry about United and Chelsea’s interest.

In other news, Manchester City are closing in on a €20m deal for Dario Sarmiento who has more dribbles than Raheem Sterling and Riyad Mahrez
