Report: Man City ‘interested’ in 26 y/o defender with more goals and assists than Sterling

Manchester City have Benjamin Mendy and Oleksandr Zinchenko at left-back, but Pep Guardiola is looking to strengthen his backline this summer. And while Nuno Mendes is on their radar, Sport say Robin Gosens is also a transfer target.

The 26-year-old is coming off the back of a prolific season at Atalanta BC, helping the Serie A side finish in a Champions League spot. Gosens had a hand in 17 of their 90 goals in the league, so he’s a real threat from left-back.

Gosens scored 11 goals and made six assists in 32 Serie A outings this campaign, more than Raheem Sterling (10 goals, 7 assists). He’s created 29 chances, won 36 aerial duels, made 26 successful dribbles, blocked 53 shots/passes/crosses, made 31 clearances, whipped in 62 crosses and averaged a tackle (46) or interception (41) every 29 minutes.

Barcelona are showing an interest in the 26-year-old and might battle City for his signature, but they also have RB Leipzig’s Angelino and Valencia’s Jose Gaya on their radar. City could land Gosens for €40m this summer, so he’s affordable.

Mendy is at risk of being offloaded when the transfer window opens, but it remains to be seen whether Guardiola will upgrade Zinchenko.

It’s bad news for this 24 y/o as Man City are the ‘likely destination’ of a £60.2m player
