Man City’s ‘sharp’ player tipped to join Chelsea as he ‘ticks every box’

Manchester City will be losing Sergio Aguero at the end of the season, but his next destination is unknown. The 32-year-old has been linked with a move to Barcelona and has talked up a return to Argentina, but he’s also said to be open to joining another Premier League outfit.

Amid links with Chelsea, Paul Merson believes the ‘sharp’ striker ‘ticks every box’ for the Blues and should be a player they consider this summer. He wrote in his Sky Sports column that Aguero is a superior centre-forward to Timo Werner, Olivier Giroud and Tammy Abraham.

Merson wrote: ‘(Aguero) ticks the box for me and the way Chelsea play – (they’re) dominant in football matches, they dictate games and have a lot of possession, they play neat and tidy football around the box and they are looking for that little ball.

‘They are not trying to hit a ball from the halfway line into a load of space, you are playing at Chelsea and when you kick off at Chelsea, you are immediately faced with 10 men behind the ball, so you need an Aguero who is sharp over three to five yards, that little ball down the side and into the box.’

Aguero joined City from Atletico Madrid in 2011 and has gone on to make 385 appearances in all competitions, scoring 257 goals with 73 assists. He’s won four Premier League titles, five League Cups and one FA Cup in his 10 years at the Etihad Stadium, so Chelsea could do a whole lot worse than Aguero.

Merson noted that the Blues don’t have a prolific goalscorer they can call upon, as no player has managed more than six goals in the Premier League this season. City are powerless to stop Aguero moving to the club of his choice, but it would be surprising if he stayed in England when his contract at the Etihad expires.
