Mark Hughes: The Changing Man

The MCFC rollercoaster has ground to a halt for now and Mark Hughes, rather than stagger to the side is standing confident ready for the next twists and turns…

He told the official site:

“I’ve changed – I’m a little bit more philosophical these days. When I see certain things in the media I shrug them off rather than get upset. There have been some ridiculous stories. It’s quite laughable at times, but it’s water off a duck’s back now.”

At times the speculation over Hughes’ future at City following Thaksin Shinawatra’s dismissal of Sven-Goran Eriksson has reached fever pitch and whether you like the City gaffer or not, you can only wonder at how he has coped with the intensity of the job.

“I’ve enjoyed it. It’s been great, even with so many things needing to be addressed. Part of the art of management is seeing things coming and pre-empting them. This season has certainly tested me in that respect!”

Everyone associated with City has certainly been through the mixer this season and come in for almighty stick but the signs are there for all to see across the board from training ground to terrace that the siege mentality we hoped Hughes would bring from Blackburn is finally starting to emerge.

The boss explained:

“Given that we’ve got through such a lot, we are all better at what we do than we were 12 months ago. As a club and as a squad we have benefited from the work we’ve done together. We have all learnt, we have had to.

“Things have happened this year that none of us had experienced, and we are stronger for it. It won’t be a smooth ride next season, but it will be more stable – it has to be. Stability comes from playing well and winning consistently, which is what we aim to do.”
