‘Might be scared’ – Pundit says Man City man could join PL rivals despite ‘fan animosity’

Raheem Sterling could be on his way out of Manchester City this summer with his contract up in 2023 and no new deal being on the horizon. The 27-year-old is being linked with a host of clubs in Europe and was previously open to a move abroad in the past, but Trevor Sinclair thinks he might consider returning to Liverpool if they made an acceptable bid.

Sterling spent five years with the Reds, joining from Queens Park Rangers in 2010 and leaving in 2015, having made 129 appearances in all competitions, scoring 23 goals with 25 assists. The England international requested a departure from Liverpool in the summer of 2015 after his agent played down such talk and refused to go on a pre-season tour.

Sterling had meetings with then-Liverpool manager Brendan Rodgers which didn’t let to a different outcome, so his departure was a bitter affair and fans didn’t look upon his favourably for the manner of his exit. Sinclair believes all could be forgiven, however, and a return may be on the cards. He said on talkSPORT: “I think they’d have him.

“I think Liverpool fans would have him back because they’ve seen what he’s won at Manchester City and the way that he’s conducted himself. Obviously it was not the greatest way to leave the football club and there was a lot of animosity between the club, the fans and Raheem.

“But whether Raheem goes back there? He might be a little bit scared by the way he was treated when he left. But I think Liverpool would have him.” Sterling has gone on to make 339 appearances in all competitions for Man City, scoring 131 goals with 95 assists, so he’s fared well in the last seven years.

Sterling wouldn’t be a bad replacement for Sadio Mane, but could Liverpool really bring him back?
