‘Mind games’ – These Man City fans react to ‘huge blow’ for Guardiola’s Champions League hopes

|

A few Manchester City supporters have been reacting on social media after Pep Guardiola confirmed that Sergio Aguero will not be fit to face Real Madrid in the Champions League.

Guardiola noted after Sunday’s 5-0 demolition of basement boys Norwich City that Aguero will not be fit to feature against Real Madrid when Los Blancos travel to the Etihad Stadium on Friday night.

Aguero has not shown enough signs of progress in his rehabilitation from a knee injury to warrant consideration for the Round of 16 clash, having missed the Sky Blues’ last eight Premier League fixtures.

His absence since last month’s win over Burnley meant he could not add to his 16 goals scored over 24 top-flight appearances this term, which only Raheem Sterling (20 goals in 33 games) could better.

The Argentine was also an absentee of City’s FA Cup victory over Newcastle United and Semi-Final loss to Arsenal, in ties which saw Gabriel Jesus lead the line but fail to score.

News of Aguero being ruled out of Friday night’s Champions League affair with Eden Hazard’s Real Madrid has left a few Citizens supporters fearing for what is to come.

Not all Man City fans are as concerned about their side’s chances of beating Real Madrid without Aguero leading the line, as some have faith in what Jesus, Sterling and Kevin de Bruyne will be capable of against the La Liga champions.

While Jesus failed to score in City’s last two FA Cup fixtures, the Brazilian scored 14 goals in 34 Premier League appearances this season – including four in his last five games – and the Sky Blues have not dropped points in a game in which the 23-year-old has found the back of the net this season.

Jesus’ form is not to say all City fans feel he is up to the task of taking it to Real Madrid, with some hoping Guardiola was playing mind games when he stated: “No, I think it will not be possible for the timing.”
