More crosses than Cancelo, more dribbles than Grealish – City eye £45m Cucurella alternative

|

Manchester City are on the hunt for a left-back this summer as Benjamin Mendy may have played his last game and Oleksandr Zinchenko hasn’t commanded a regular starting place.

Joao Cancelo has successful operated in the makeshift role, but he’s expected to revert to right-back next season, so there’s a void on the left that needs to be filled.

City are pushing hard to sign Brighton & Hove Albion defender Marc Cucurella, but The Sun say Wolverhampton Wanderers left-back Rayan Ait-Nouri is on their wishlist.

The 21-year-old, who initially joined Wolves on loan from Angers SCO in 2020 and impressed enough to earn a five-year deal in 2021, was in fine form in his first season as a permanent player.

Ait-Nouri scored one goal with four assists from 23 Premier League games, whipping in more accurate crosses (24) than Joao Cancelo (20), having more successful dribbles (42) than Jack Grealish (40), making more tackles (64) than Bernardo Silva (57) and more interceptions (24) than Aymeric Laporte (20).

The uncapped Frenchman would definitely improve City’s squad, but he won’t come cheap. Wolves want £45m for Ait-Nouri, so he could cost £10m more than Cucurella. Time will tell which player City end up signing.
