More goals and assists than Mahrez – Man City should sign 26 y/o to replace Sterling [Opinion]

|

Raheem Sterling could be on his way out of Manchester City this summer, forcing Pep Guardiola to scour the transfer market for his replacement. Sterling scored 131 goals with 94 assists from 337 games, so the 27-year-old will leave big shoes to fill at City.

It does appear the Sky Blues have a successor lined up, however, with Phil Thomas of The Sun citing Serge Gnabry as a transfer target. The 26-year-old has 12 months remaining on his contract at Bayern Munich and rejected a new deal, so the Bundesliga giants may have to cash in early rather than risk lose him for nothing. Their sitation with Gnabry mimics that of City’s with Sterling.

The German international scored 14 goals with six assists from 34 Bundesliga games last season, more than Riyad Mahrez managed (27 PL games, 9 goals, 6 assists), so he’d improve the squad. Guardiola can’t afford to lose Sterling and Gabriel Jesus in the same transfer window without replacing one of the pair, so Gnabry would be the ideal option.

And with an asking price of £35m, he wouldn’t break the bank. City could offload Jesus or Sterling and sign the German international for less money. That might be good business.
