Smug as you like spendthrift super gaffer and two time Chelsea supremo José Mourinho has issued a dimissal in the general direction of the Manchester City dressing room…

In his latest rambling press conference ahead of bringing his frugally assembled squad to The Etihad Campus, the ‘special happy one’ has taken the football world to task over the gushing praise which is increasingly afforded City’s top of the league players after each scintillating performance by rival managers, players, hacks and learned pundits alike:

‘They are lucky…The reality is they have many crucial decisions in their favour. Against Liverpool, the Sterling ‘goal’. The penalty on Suarez. Against Newcastle the goal that is a clear goal. Against Tottenham, Dawson’s goal, the penalty, the red card. They are having everything…The referees, they try to do their best and sometimes they make mistakes and normally during the season the mistakes are split between teams. In their case, they have everything in their favour.’

Fighting talk and then some, all of which flies in the face of the arslikhan Mourinho has been dishing out about City previously in this campaign. His selective amnesia has to be called into question at this point too as his own side have clearly benefitted from decisions over such noteable events as a blatant Ramires dive against West Brom and Samuel Eto’o upending Liverpool’s Suarez in the penalty area.

But let’s not follow his lead too heavily on that issue. There’s more. Tim Sherwood, the Tottenham manager was gracious in the aftermath of a heavy defeat to City this past week, describing Manchester’s Blues as ‘The best team on the planet.’

When asked for his opinion, the manager who to all intents and purposes appears to be playing mind games with himself as the likes of cool for cats Manuel Pellegrini ignore him, said:

‘Maybe, for the Tottenham manager, the planet is England…You will see in the Champions League. You will see in a couple of months.’

The mardy Chelsea manager has most certainly thrown the gauntlet down.

For his part, City’s shrewd Engineer said at his own press conference:

“The game against Chelsea is very important for both teams. Arsenal and Chelsea are both having a good season. Just because they have dropped points does not mean they are weaker. Whatever happens in the game, the season is not over. There are still 42 points to play for. At the moment, we are not thinking about titles. We are thinking about improving and winning every game…I don’t think we are the best team in the planet. But if we play exactly the way we did against Tottenham, we are a very good team.”
