Remember the furore when Wimbledon upped sticks and changed their name to the Milton Keynes Dons? Now times that by 1,000 and you may someway in understand the horror that has suddenly surfaced at Manchester United.

Although not official – and you certainly will not find anyone at the club who will even talk about it – there have been small, if persistent rumours to combat the impending financial meltdown at United could be resolved by moving the entire club to another location. Ask any City fan and they will gladly tell you that their Red neighbours are technically not in Manchester, but if the Glazer’s get their wish, they won’t even be in the country.

One source, who asked expressly not to be named at the club, explained that several venues were currently being looked at by an outside company who had been hired by United for this purpose.

‘Obviously,’ explains the source, ‘London is at the top of the list, because it is the capital and has a population of 8,000,000, where an extra 12,000,000 can be added within a radius of 60 miles.’

Evidently though, the Glazer’s are not just looking at London as a possible new home for the club, and are in fact searching further a field.

‘It has been mooted that New York could be a possible new venue, but of course that would depend upon being accepted into the MLS franchise.’ added the same source.

We asked Jonathan Hall of the FA, who is Director of Football Services if there was a basis for this, or whether it would create a precedent…

‘We have heard nothing to this effect, so I cannot really comment upon it,’ said Hall, ‘however, there is little in the statute books that would expressly forbid it, but I feel that it would most certainly be a case to be brought to FIFA, as they are the World Governing Body.’
