It’s time for Blues boss, Roberto Mancini to target a Premier League title without the excuses this time.

City’s spending and the quality of their squad should already be enough to challenge, regardless of the fact they were given a bit of football lesson by Manchester United last weekend. Yet quotes from Mancini saying, ‘I think that if we complete our squad…I think we can fight for the title this year,’ don’t exactly fill you with confidence.

As much as the players need to overcome their Man Utd and Chelsea counterparts so does Mancini.

Up against managers as bullish and confident as Alex Ferguson and Andre Villas-Boas you fear for him being out-matched and eventually out-manoeuvred.

After last season’s success Mancini does deserve support and I wouldn’t even advocate him being sacked if he did fall short of winning the title this time. However, early season negativity and excuses about needing more players, simply aren’t a great recipe for getting the most out of a squad. Especially when it’s a squad with a few players just looking for an excuse to under-perform.

City have so much potential, but like Arsenal they can’t afford to keeping talking about ‘potential’ without ever truly realising it.
