Manchester City manager Mark Hughes believes City will offer Blackburn Rovers one more bid for striker Roque Santa Cruz and if that it turned down, City will walk away.

An initial fee, tabled late on Wednesday, is believed to have been for £16m, only a slight improvement on the £15m offered in the second of City’s two bids; however, time is running out for the Lancashire club.

Hughes admitted for the first time yesterday (Wednesday 8 January) that the pursuit of players was proving tough.

‘We are finding it a little bit difficult to get the players that we want here.’

‘I know [the Blackburn chairman] John Williams very well. If he feels that it’s not right, then we will have to accept that and look elsewhere. It will come to a point where we will have to make a decision and that could be the decision to walk away.’

Hughes rejected suggestions that the club should pay whatever it takes…

‘If John doesn’t want to sell, then what can we do?’

‘If we throw £50m at it, then I am sure they would sell, but we are not going to do that.’

If you were John Williams (Rovers Chairman), what would you do? Hold out for another million or sell Santa Cruz and think yourself lucky.
