Man City could bag the next Fernandinho with swoop for “remarkable” €50m machine – Opinion

AC Milan midfielder Ismael Bennacer is reportedly a wanted asset, with both Man City and Arsenal recently eyeing transfer swoops for the Algeria international – and Pep Guardiola could be looking at the next Fernandinho if we do manage to tempt him with a move to the Etihad Stadium.

Back in late July, french news outlet le10sport hinted that winger Riyad Mahrez could play a heavy role in persuading his international teammate to sign for City – with the attacker’s influence looking like a real advantage in the race for Bennacer.

Is Ismael Bennacer the man to succeed Fernandinho?

Yes, pay the £45.1 million

No, give Rodri time to settle

Even though we face competition from the likes of Arsenal and Paris-Saint Germain, Milan have made it clear that an offer below €50 million (£45.1 million) will not be considered – potentially putting City in the driving seat given PSG’s reported lack of summer resources.

Fernandinho 2.0

The Brazilian enforcer played a key role during our 2018/2019 domestic quadruple-winning season, sitting in front of the back four and helping to break up play.

In that time, Fernandinho averaged an impressive 2 tackles and 1.4 interceptions per 90 according to WhoScored – numbers that have since been bettered in Serie A by Bennacer.

The 22-year-old, making 2.2 tackles and 1.7 interceptions by comparison, somewhat edges our club hero already at such a young age.

Fernandinho’s one-year contract extension gives City time to find an apt successor, and it appears Bennacer could be a serious candidate to mirror his tenacity in midfield.

What the pundits say…

Former Egypt and Al Ahly defender Wael Gomaa heaped praise on the youngster recently, taking to Twitter and voicing the fact he has had a ‘remarkable’ effect on Milan’s side over 2019/2020.

“Ismael Bennacer is is one of the best players at Milan this season. He’s continuously developing every game and he’s had a remarkable role in the team,” Gomaa explained on social media.

“That explains the recent interest of Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain in acquiring his services.”

The final verdict…

Fernandinho’s contribution during the Pep Guardiola era cannot be understated, and City will have to seriously consider finding a replacement who could prove just as efficient.

Judging by the evidence, it appears Bennacer may well be that man.
