Why Man City need not worry about Chelsea in their pursuit of £100m player [Opinion]

|

Manchester City are desperate to sign Aston Villa’s Jack Grealish and Tottenham Hotspur’s Harry Kane this summer, but their pursuit for the former looked in jeopardy after TransferMarketWeb reported of Chelsea’s interest.

TMW say that City are closing in on a deal to sign Grealish but may have to deal with an eleventh-hour hijack from Chelsea. It’s hard to see such a report being true, however, as the Blues are overstocked in his position.

Thomas Tuchel has Timo Werner and Christian Pulisic who can operate on the left flank while Mason Mount and Kai Havertz can play in the central attacking-midfield role.

No doubt Chelsea would love a playmaker on the level of Grealish but not at the expense of axing talented players. The 25-year-old boasts six goals and 12 assists from 26 Premier League games last season but isn’t a priority.

Chelsea may instead need a centre-forward as Werner has been profligate while Tammy Abraham is out-of-favour. And with Ruben Loftus-Cheek, Ross Barkley, Danny Drinkwater and Tiemoue Bakayoko having uncertain futures, a midfielder to accompany N’Golo Kante, Jorginho and Mateo Kovacic wouldn’t go amiss.

Regardless, City shouldn’t worry about the rumours.
