Mario Balotelli has led a nomadic career after leaving Manchester City but currently finds himself a free agent. The 30-year-old was released by Brescia over the summer and has yet to join a new club.

He’s been linked with Vasco da Gama, Watford, Genoa, AS Saint-Etienne and various clubs in Asia, but The Sun say he was recently in talks with Barnsley. The Italian international’s proposed move fell through, however, and here’s why…

The Sun say Balotelli was offered to Barnsley when talks were held between his agent Mino Raiola and the Tykes’ co-chairmen Chien Lee & Paul Conway. The 30-year-old was keen on making the switch to Oakwell too but eventually lost interest as negotiations were dragging.

Balotelli is currently training with Italian Serie D side Franciacorta and has turned his attentions away from Barnsley. It remains to be seen where he’ll end up, but nothing should be discounted.

The Italian striker was happy to drop down a division in Italy when Brescia came calling, and he was in talks with Watford over a potential move this summer too.

For a player who’s won three Serie A titles, one Premier League title, one Champions League, one Italian Cup and one FA Cup, it’s sad to see Balotelli’s career falling by the wayside.
