Opinion: Riyad Mahrez – He Doesn’t Look Comfortable

|

The most expensive African footballer ever, Riyad Mahrez joined Manchester City from Leicester City in the summer for a reported £60m, but, with only a handful of MCFC appearances under his belt is it too early to begin criticising the 27-year-old?

Capped 39 times for his country, the Algerian international has, when wearing a sky blue shirt looked like a timid rabbit, you know, similar to when a vehicle’s headlights freeze the fury friend dead in its tracks.

The alternative for the adorable creature is to either remain in situ and get run over or, break the spell and get on with it.

Riyad began his City career when Pep named him in his starting XI for the Community Shield season opener against Chelsea. But let’s be fair, his debut was as exciting as running over broken glass.

After 68 minutes Pep had seen enough and replaced him with Gabriel Jesus.

There were glimmers of hope, something inside waiting to jump out and excite us all but here comes the rabbit analogy again.

Undoubtedly Pep and his management team are a tad concerned regarding Riyad fitting into City’s style of play. Having said that City’s boss is the master at bringing out the best in his players. For example, Bernardo Silva. It took him half a season to adapt and look at him now.

Mahrez doesn’t look comfortable at this moment in time, but one of the reasons why he joined the club was that he wanted to play regular Champions League football. Well, now’s the time to put your cards on the table and show us the form you had during your four-year spell at Leicester.
