No hinting at going elsewhere if not picked for every game. No revelations about who’s not talking to who. The professional Patrick Vieira tells it like it should be…

I recall being told by an Italian pundit around the time of Patrick Vieira’s signing for Manchester City that Roberto Mancini and the big Frenchman do not get on at all. Indeed, at Internazionale, Mancio and Paddy had numerous disagreements.

Yet while a handful of Manchester City stars indulge in self serving televised squabbles, the classy 34-year-old City midfielder has chosen his own interview opportunity to outline his readiness to fight for his first team place:

‘I still have the desire and determination to do well and I strongly believe that if every player gives 100 percent commitment to the football club it will be an exciting season for us…I leave picking the team up to the manager. Every day, every single player will try to show the manager that he wants to play and after that he will pick the eleven that start.’

Vieira also had these words to say for his team mates:

‘If we want to do well in the league and the Europa Cup, and the national cups, it will be all of the 25 players who make a difference. If every single player understands that, this squad will go really far.’

Vieira is highly likely to start at Tottenham on Saturday after some solid pre-season performances and is mindful of his intentions to hit the ground running at Spurs:

‘Last season was frustrating for me. It is never easy when you arrive at a new club and are already injured. You want to get back as soon as you can but physically you are always behind the other players. It was quite tough and difficult but…now I have had no injuries and not missed any training. Now I have to work really hard, and every time the manager needs me to start or be on the bench I will be ready to give everything.’

And for the legion of experts who have written The World Cup Winner off, don’t forget that not far outside Manchester, Scholes, Giggs, Neville and Van Der Sar are all older than him.
