Manager Manuel Pellegrini has admitted it wasn’t our night last night against Roma in Group E of the Champions League, but he knows there’s a very specific reason for why it wasn’t our night.

We weren’t good enough, we weren’t up to our own standards and we certainly weren’t up to the expectations he has of us.

Speaking to the Official Site following the game, a disappointed manager was upbeat about our chances for qualification though and our chances to kick on further in our performance levels.

‘I think that the point maybe playing at home is never good but also have to consider that we played against a very strong team in a good moment. When the other teams scores, it’s not just one or two players’ problems – he had too much space in that play. Maybe the movements were not correct but we didn’t play in the way we normally play to score goals.’

Pellegrini goes on to say that in the final 20 minutes he felt he saw us perform as we could and as we normally do, but that was in effect 70 minutes too late to get the result we all wanted.

‘The draw was the real thing that happened over 90 minutes.’

As for qualification with us only having one point from two group games now, he added.

‘It will depend on how we play the next games whether we qualify. One point from six is tough but we’re just three points behind Roma. I hope next time in Russia we can win then we will see what happens. Today was not our day.’

With midfield clearly being overrun at points during the 90 minutes the gaffer did address that but didn’t think our problem was down to a lack of numbers, for him, our movement wasn’t right when in possession and that unfortunately helped us to give the ball away regularly, in a very sloppy fashion for him and that’s clearly something we have to address because it cost us last night.

‘We didn’t play well, we lost the ball to easily. The biggest problem was that we missed many easy passes. They made it difficult but we could have won it in the last 20 minutes, we will fight to the end to qualify.’
