Manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that our game against Liverpool will be a marker for the coming season despite it only being the second game of the league campaign.

Speaking to the Official Site ahead of the game, Pellegrini used the old ‘six pointer’ cliche in describing the importance of matches like this when they come to helping to decide the eventual Champions.

‘I always say to the players these games are games of six points – especially when you play at home against one of the most important squads in the Premier League in Liverpool.’

The gaffer goes on to say that we’ve obviously studied their game against Southampton and of course we faced them in America, so ‘we know what they’re doing’ and we know the threat they can pose so it’s down to us to stop them.

With Luis Suarez biting with both hands his opportunity at Barcelona, former striker Mario Balotelli has been brought in as his replacement, so that will add a different element to the game but our gaffer has tipped him to do well at his new club but he did dismiss suggestions that last season would play a part for them.

‘I cannot know whether Liverpool will be affected by last season or not. My way of thinking is that last season is finished and we are not thinking about it anymore. These are different games and different moments but it’s important for our team to start winning points at home.’

The gaffer also confirms that some players are still off the pace fitness wise following our disrupted pre season with the World Cup, but almost everybody is almost there and they come into contention again, even if only in terms of maybe getting a longer run out in the second half.
