Manager Manuel Pellegrini has said that despite our penalty loss to Liverpool, he was pleased with a number of aspects of our play and our performance on the night.

With Stevan Jovetic grabbed himself a brace in the game and continuing his own form, when speaking to the Official Site after the game, he obviously figured in the gaffer’s thoughts.

‘I have said before that Stevan is a very important player for us and he proved again what an asset he can be. He had a number of different injuries last season but now he is fully fit, I am sure if he continues in this way he will show why he is here. If he’s fit all the year he will be a very important player for us.’

Pellegrini also talked about our overall performance in the match, saying that whilst disappointed to go out on penalties, he believes we should’ve gone into the half time break wit the advantage, and put the game to bed during normal time with the chances we created.

‘I’m very happy because it was a good, competitive game and useful for both teams. We played well for the first 45 minutes when 0-0 didn’t reflect exactly what happened. We are trying to prepare our team the best way possible and I feel we have had a very good pre season. We had another five players playing game time and the rest of the squad arrive next week.’

He goes on to say that everything is just geared towards the players being fit, ready and in form for when we open the Community Shield game and then the Premier League kick off, and for him, that is the only thing that matters at this stage.
