Manager Manuel Pellegrini has said it was a very important three points against West Bromwich Albion and there were a lot of positives from the game.

Whilst most of the press will focus on the performance of the referee and his slight FUBAR in sending off the wrong Albion player, Pellegrini told the Official Site that the points, the performance and of course Wilfried Bony’s first club goal were the highlights for him and he defended the overall performance of the referee – especially his early red card decision even if all the Albion players looked alike to him.

‘We have lost the last two games in different competitions, so it was important to return to victory. He (referee) made a mistake about the player, but I think the rule is very clear. Unfortunately for West Bromwich Albion they had to play 88 minutes with one player less. But it is not always the case that you play well with one more player.’

Pellegrini went on to say that even with the man advantage everybody knows what a Tony Pulis team is about and Saido Berahino especially for them knows where the net is, so for him we have to be very concentrated and focused in defence so we didn’t get caught on the counter attack and make life difficult for ourselves.

As for Bony’s first goal since joining us from Swansea in the January window, the gaffer went on to say that it would have been very important for the player, especially as he is still recovering from African Cup of Nations duty.

‘It is important for him because he has just arrived in our squad and he has come in from playing six games in 18 days in the African Cup of Nations. That is not good at this moment of the season for the players, and that is why he is not always in the starting XI. It is the important thing, not just for Bony but for every player, to take chances in the way he did today.’

With title hopes and challenges figuring highly as he spoke to the press following the win, Pellegrini was banging the same drum talking about what we can control which is our own games and not worrying about Chelsea or any other side near us.

‘We have to play eight games more, we can win the eight games and if Chelsea don`t drop points we cannot win the title. So the important thing is not to think about other teams, to think about our team, improve and win the next game which is Crystal Palace. I don`t think that our fans don`t believe we can do it, the important thing is to demonstrate playing the way we did today that we will try to win.’
