A very disappointed Manuel Pellegrini had to admit that we just lacked a created spark in today’s loss to Stoke and he’s frustrated that we now enter the international break on the back of a loss – our first of the season.

Speaking to the Official Site following the one nil defeat, he explained.

‘It’s always disappointing to lose three points here at home. It was very important for our team to try and win the nine points before the international break, and it’s not good to finish with a defeat. But these games always happen once a year and today it happened to our team.’

Pellegrini went on to dismiss suggestions that we were ‘casual’ in our play, saying he felt we were patient, tried to create space but ultimately Stoke defended very well on the day and we just couldn’t find that final ball to open them up.

‘We didn’t play very well creatively and it was a bad day, the team will continue working in the same way as we do now.’

Bad day at the office for the manager more than anything else, and he’s right, these things do happen and it’s easy to get carried away, but what matters now is the response to this and how we perform in the next match.

The manager also confirmed that although he wouldn’t comment directly on the referee, for him, everybody knows it was a penalty when Yaya Toure went down in the box late on during the game, but that was one ‘minute’ out of the 90 so he wasn’t going to make too much of it, but as disappointed as he was with that decision, he felt the whole team let Stoke score way too easily and without singling out anybody, he feels a lot could’ve been done by quite a few players to shut that move down before they put the ball in the net.

As for the injury to Fernando, the gaffer confirmed he would be fully assessed tomorrow because it was a groin problem, but hopefully it won’t be too serious.
