Guardiola won’t let 28 y/o leave despite exodus, Chelsea won’t sign 3rd Man City player [Opinion]

Chelsea are closing on in signing Raheem Sterling from Manchester City this summer and would like Nathan Ake to follow him to Stamford Bridge, but Alex Young of the London Evening Standard says the Blues also have their sights set on Aymeric Laporte. They stand little chance of signing him, however.

Sterling is being granted a departure because his contract is up in 2023 and City haven’t managed to tie him down to a new deal. They’re cashing in early before he leaves on a free transfer next year. Jack Grealish is also able to step up in his absence.

Nathan Ake is being granted a departure because he’s surplus to requirements. The 27-year-old finds himself behind Laporte, Ruben Dias and John Stones in the pecking order, so City will reinvest the money made from his sale to fund the move for Marc Cucurella.

Laporte, however, is indispensable. The 28-year-old made 44 appearances in all competitions last season, scoring four goals. He formed a rigid partnership alongside Dias and looks happy at City after previously being frustrated with a lack of playing time.

Should Pep Guardiola sell Aymeric Laporte?

Yes

No

Pep Guardiola can handle selling Sterling and Ake to Chelsea and Gabriel Jesus to Arsenal, but he’d be forced to sign a stellar centre-back if Laporte was offloaded, so Chelsea may have to turn their attentions elsewhere.
