Pep Guardiola could struggle to sell Man City player next season [Opinion]

|

Sergio Gomez has an uncertain future at Manchester City after a disappointing debut season, but Pep Guardiola could struggle to sell the 22-year-old as few suitors will want to pay up to €13m (£11.5m) for an underperforming player.

Gomez has made 12/32 appearances (37.5%) in all competitions since joining from RSC Anderlecht last summer, amassing a paltry 580 minutes of football from a possible 2880 (20%).

The Spanish U21 international has only featured in five of 21 Premier League games and is yet to start in the top-flight as he doesn’t have the trust of his manager, so City would find it hard to make back every penny spent on him.

Instead, Guardiola might have more luck loaning Gomez out to a club this summer, as it’s less financial risk for a suitor. A buying option could be attached to the deal too, so he could be sold if he impresses elsewhere.

Pep won’t want to give up on a player so soon after signing him, but it’s telling that Gomez hasn’t featured in the league since October and is bottom of the fullback pecking order.

Guardiola has preferred Joao Cancelo, Nathan Ake, Aymeric Laporte, Phil Foden and Rico Lewis on the left over Gomez, so his future doesn’t appear to be at the Etihad Stadium.

Gomez has spent most of his career in Spain (Badalona before 2009, Espanyol in 2009/10, Barcelona between 2010-2018, Huesca between 2019-2021), being loaned back to his home country while at Borussia Dortmund, so he might prefer a return to Spain if he’s temporarily moved on.
