Phil Foden impressed as a central midfielder as Manchester City enjoyed a 3-1 win over Sevilla in midweek, having five shots, creating three chances, having two successful dribbles, whipping in six crosses and winning three freekicks.

The 22-year-old started alongside Cole Palmer and was City’s most threatening player in Wednesday’s Champions League clash, so Pep Guardiola has a decision to make on what to do with him against Fulham.

City welcome the Cottagers to the Etihad Stadium on Saturday afternoon and are big favourites to pick up all three points. Victory for the Sky Blues will send them top of the Premier League table with Arsenal travelling to Chelsea a day later, so Guardiola can’t afford to take any risks with his side.

Foden has made 18 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring seven goals with three assists. He’s been outstanding for City and is one of their most important players, but there might be too much competition from Kevin De Bruyne, Bernardo Silva and Ilkay Gundogan to start in midfield against Fulham.

Guardiola and Kevin De Bruyne believe Foden will eventually make the permanent transition into a midfielder, but he might have to play out wide for a bit longer due to Jack Grealish and Riyad Mahrez struggling to contribute goals and assists.
