Pep Guardiola has identified 15-goal man as Sergio Aguero’s successor at Man City

Manchester City were desperate to sign a prolific striker to replace Sergio Aguero after the 32-year-old joined Barcelona on a free transfer this summer, but the Premier League champions failed to bring Harry Kane to the Etihad Stadium.

Pep Guardiola has an internal solution to the problem, however, by using Ferran Torres in the makeshift role. The 21-year-old joined Man City on a five-year deal from Valencia and has gone on to make 40 appearances in all competitions, scoring 15 goals with four assists.

Torres boasts eight goals in 17 games for the Spanish national team too, so he’s proven to be prolific from out wide and could make the transition to play through the middle. Guardiola has Phil Foden, Raheem Sterling, Riyad Mahrez, Jack Grealish and Bernardo Silva, but he believes Torres is the one with striker potential.

He told reporters (h/t Manchester Evening News): “In this position, he makes movements like the best strikers in behind, like Jamie Vardy. He is a good finisher, he is so young. Manchester City made an incredible job buying him.”

Torres has scored two goals and made one assist in three Premier League games this season, so he’s having the dream start to life as a striker. Man City have scored 10 goals in their last two league outings too, so they’re creating more than enough chances to make up for a lack of a natural centre-forward.
