Pep Guardiola must keep 28 y/o Man City man next season despite ‘assurances’ claim [Opinion]

Giorgio Chielini has left Juventus after 17 years and Corriere Dello Sport (h/t Daily Mail) said days ago that the Old Lady have Aymeric Laporte on their list of potential replacements.

Laporte has been an important player under Pep Guardiola, wrestling back his place in the side this season after playing second fiddle to Ruben Dias and John Stones, but Corriere Dello Sport believe he’s unhappy with a lack of playing time and wants ‘assurances’ over his role.

But given Laporte made 44 appearances across the board last season, playing in all but one of City last 25 Premier League outings and playing every minute of their Champions League quarter-final and semi-final clashes, is he really unhappy about a lack of games?

Nevertheless, Guardiola can’t afford to lose his central defender as Nathan Ake wouldn’t be a reliable deputy for Dias and Stones. He’s surplus to requirements and might be sold for the right price this summer if reports are to be believed.

Laporte has made 155 appearances in all competitions since joining City from Athletic in 2018, scoring 12 goals with three assists. He’s been a terrific servant and remains a key player to this day.
