Pep Guardiola will be pleased with Man City defender after Brighton win [Opinion]

|

Manchester City enjoyed a 3-1 win over Brighton & Hove Albion on Saturday afternoon and Aymeric Laporte was one of many players who impressed.

The 28-year-old was handed his first Premier League start of the season, lining up alongside Ruben Dias at centre-back, and helped to limit the Seagulls to only two shots on target over the 90 minutes.

No player made more clearances or blocked more shots than Laporte, so he was deserving of the plaudits and will have impressed Pep Guardiola.

Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News gave the Spanish international a player rating of 6/10 and said he put in a ‘solid’ performance at the back. Grey Whitebloom of 90min gave Laporte a player rating of 8/10 and praised his composure in possession. Arnav Kholkar of Sportskeeda gave the 28-year-old a player rating of 7/10 and said he had a ‘good start’ to the game.

Against Brighton, Laporte played for 90 minutes, had 52 touches, completed 92.9% of his 42 passes, had two shots, made three clearances, blocked one shot and didn’t give away a foul at the Etihad Stadium.

Laporte has made four appearances in all competitions this season, starting City’s last Champions League group game and their last league outing, so he’s definitely back. Nathan Ake was an unused substitute, so he might have to fight for his place back in the side under Pep.
