Players’ day off, family in Scotland – Report reveals how Man City deal was agreed

|

Pep Guardiola has signed a new two-year deal at Manchester City which will take his stay at the Etihad to nine years if he remains in charge by 2025, but his future looked uncertain for the longest time as his contract was in its final year this season.

The 51-year-old was always relaxed about the situation and insisted he wanted to stay in Manchester for as long as he was welcome, but there were fears he might leave at the end of his contract. Pol Ballus and Sam Lee of The Athletic revealed talks over a new deal began in mid-October, however.

After City lost to Liverpool on October 16, Guardiola gave his players some time off and travelled to Scotland with his family to switch off. It’s believed he had talks with his family over his City future and then had talks with the club over extending his stay.

Ballus and Lee revealed that it was important to Pep for everyone close to him to sign off on the deal, so he felt comfortable to commit his future when all parties were on the same page. And now he can focus on winning domestic and European honours this season.
