‘Poor’, ‘Ouch’ – Man City defender criticised for ‘schoolboy error’

|

Manchester City suffered their first Premier League defeat of the season at the hands of Liverpool, losing 1-0 at Anfield on Sunday afternoon, and Joao Cancelo was criticised for the mistake he made in the build up to Liverpool’s winning goal.

The 28-year-old was out-muscled to a long ball from Alisson by Mohamed Salah who went on to finish past Ederson midway through the second half. Cancelo wasn’t at his creative past on Merseyside and wasn’t as accurate with his passing, so he’ll quickly want to forget about the defeat.

Simon Bajkowski of the Manchester Evening News gave the Portuguese international a player rating 4/10 and was critical over his ‘schoolboy error’ that let Salah in. BBC Sport’s viewers gave Cancelo a player rating of 4.18/10.

Mike McGrath of the Telegraph gave the 28-year-old a player rating of 5/10 and said he made a ‘poor mistake’. Mitch Wilks of 90min gave Cancelo a player rating of 4/10 and was critical of his ‘loose touches’ while saying his ‘lacked confidence’ at Anfield. And when describing his performance, Wilks said ‘ouch’.

Against Liverpool, Cancelo played for 90 minutes, had 61 touches, won two aerial duels, completed 76.9% of his 39 passes, failed to create a chance, whipped in just one accurate one, failed to register a shot on target, made three tackles, had one interception, failed to make a clearance and had one successful dribble.

The 28-year-old has made 15 appearances in all competitions this season, scoring two goals with five assists. Cancelo has impressed this campaign but had a tough day in the office on Sunday.
