Report: Player could leave Man City due to ‘losing his place’ and contract talks being ‘shelved’

Raheem Sterling was expected to put pen to paper on a contract extension at Manchester City, keeping him at the Etihad Stadium until his early 30s, but the Daily Star say the 26-year-old could be on his way out after struggling for form and playing time of late.

Sterling’s future in Manchester is uncertain due to him ‘losing his place’ under Pep Guardiola and the Daily Star added that talks over a new deal have since been ‘shelved’. Real Madrid are hoping to capitalise on the situation, but it remains to be seen if they’ll be successful luring the England international to the Santiago Bernabeu.

Sterling joined City from Liverpool in 2015 and has gone on to make 285 appearances in all competitions, scoring 113 goals with 86 assists. He had been a regular under Guardiola but has since been benched for a number of games and it’s had an adverse affect on his form.

The 26-year-old has gone two months without scoring in the Premier League and has made only one assist in that time too. He hasn’t contributed a goal in the Champions League since November 2020 and has amassed only 22 minutes of playing time in City’s last three European outings.

Sterling still has two years left on his deal, so the Sky Blues don’t need to rush tying him down. But Real believe they might be able to lure him away from the Etihad as things haven’t gone too well of late.
