Report: Director had ‘meeting in Manchester’ for 21 y/o, £33.8m player ‘open’ to move

Ferran Torres has enjoyed a bright start to life at Manchester City and has attracted interest from overseas as a result. ESPN say the 21-year-old finds himself on the radar of Barcelona and is reportedly ‘open’ to a move back to Spain.

Barca’s Director of Football Mateu Alemany and CEO Ferran Reverter had a ‘meeting in Manchester’ to discuss a deal for Torres, but the outcome wasn’t positive. City are keen to keep the Spanish international at the Etihad Stadium so they’re not entertaining offers.

ESPN say a bid of €40m (£33.8m) might be enough to tempt the Premier League defending champions into selling, but it’s hard to see why they’d do that even if Torres was interested in joining Barca. The 21-year-old has four years remaining on his deal, so City have no obligation to cash in early.

Torres joined the Sky Blues from Valencia in August 2020 and has gone on to make 43 appearances in all competitions, scoring 16 goals with four assists. This season, the Spaniard has scored three goals with one assist in seven games across the board, so he’s been effective under Pep Guardiola.

Sergio Aguero’s departure over the summer left a void in attack that Torres has filled, so he’s too valuable to let go. And whether debt-ridden Barca really have the funds to sign him is unknown.
