Despite Pep Guardiola signing a new two-year deal at Manchester City this week, a report from Spain claims the Sky Blues might eventually replace him with a rival Premier League manager.
Guardiola recently extended his stay at the Etihad Stadium until 2025, but Alfredo Martinez of Sport says City are considering Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta to replace him when his new contract is up.
The Arsenal manager was also accused of stalling his own new deal because of City and Barcelona’s alleged interest. Arteta is contracted at Arsenal 2025, so his future isn’t up in the air in North London. The Gunners are top of the Premier League table too, so he won’t be thinking about leaving now or later.
Guardiola has never suggested he would leave City, even while his contract had just months to go, so is Arteta really thinking he’s going to replace him? The timing of Martinez’s report is interesting as Guardiola has committed to City for two more years and a lot can change in that time.
Arteta, a student of Pep who worked at City, is leading Arsenal to a title challenge, so he wouldn’t jeopardise his position at the club by leaving the door open to a future Premier League move.
