Manchester City quickly identified Erling Haaland as Sergio Aguero’s successor after missing out on Harry Kane last summer, and Mario Cortegana of Marca (h/t Sport Witness) says the Premier League leaders are confident they’ve won the race for his signature.
The 21-year-old joined Borussia Dortmund on a four-and-a-half-year deal from RB Salzburg in January 2020 and has made 87 appearances in all competitions for the Bundesliga giants, scoring 85 goals with 23 assists. Haaland has two years remaining on his deal, but he’s expected to leave Dortmund this summer due to his €75m (£63m) release clause which is actived at the end of the season.
City are one of many clubs who can afford the Norwegian international, but it appears they’re the only side willing to match his £500k-per-week/£26m-a-year (€594k-per-week/€30.9m-a-year) wage demands. The Sky Blues may be the only side that have agreed to pay Mino Raiola’s €40m (£33.6m) agent fees and Alf Inge Haaland’s €30m (£25.2m) commission.
The entire package will set City back around £251.8m (€299.7m), so it’s easy to see why many sides have pulled out of the race. It’s a large financial commitment on one player, so Haaland will be under pressure to hit the ground running.
