Report: Man City ‘interested’ in Barcelona midfielder who ‘wants to play’ in Champions League

|

Manchester City are blessed with depth in midfield (Kevin De Bruyne, Phil Foden, Ilkay Gundogan, Bernardo Silva) and aren’t expecting to lose an existing player this summer, but Pep Guardiola is still considering an addition to his engine room.

Jonathan Shrager says Man City are ‘interested’ in Frenkie De Jong and may have a good chance of signing him because they’re challenging for major honours. Shrager notes that the 24-year-old wants to play in the Champions League and might be more receptive to a side in the semi-finals rather than Barcelona who were eliminated from Europa League.

De Jong joined the Catalans from Ajax in 2019 and has gone on to make 136 appearances in all competitions, scoring 13 goals with 17 assists. The Netherlands international has been a regular under Xavi this season and is a player the club want to keep, but City could exert a lot of pressure.

De Jong has four years remaining on his deal at Barca, but Marca (h/t Inside Futbol) say he’s not happy being substituted so frequently and can’t rule out a move from the Camp Nou. This is good news for Man City, but the Catalans aren’t obligated to cash in while he’s contracted until 2026, so time will tell if their pursuit is successful.
