Report: Man City midfielder could stay this summer, player ‘open to extending’ contract

|

Fernandinho has an uncertain future at Manchester City as he turns 37 in May and is out of contract this summer, but Joe Bray of the Manchester Evening News believes he could stay for another 12 months.

The Brazilian international no longer commands a starting place as Rodri is first-choice under Pep Guardiola, but he’s still ‘open to extending’ his contract because he doesn’t deem is a problem providing a supporting role.

Guardiola is a big fan of Fernandinho too, praising his leadership qualities in December 2021 and insisting he’s vital to the squad in February 2022, so City could be happy to keep him for another year.

Fernandinho joined the Sky Blues from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2013 and has gone on to make 372 appearances in all competitions, scoring 25 goals with 32 assists, but his playing time has become more sporadic as his career winds down.

The 36-year-old has made 22 appearances across the board this season, but he’s started only 54% of those games. Fernandinho has started just once in the Premier League since the turn of the year, so his role is clearly defined. But if Guardiola sees value in keeping the Brazilian in the squad and Fernandinho is willing to stay, might a new deal be on the horizon?
