Manchester City are ready to offer a contract to former Cardiff City prospect Cameron Coxe following his release from the Championship side, according to Wales Online.

Coxe was deemed surplus to requirements at the Cardiff City Stadium by boss Neil Harris at the end of the 2019/20 Championship season, and allowed to leave the Bluebirds at the end of his contract despite previously being touted as a star of the future.

Cardiff fans started the season excited to see more of the young right-back but were left disappointed, with the Wales U21 international failing to feature in any Championship fixture and only earning a spot on the bench six times.

Harris awarded the 21-year-old his season debut in the Carabao Cup against Luton Albion in the Second Round but failed to help Cardiff to progress and would have to wait until the FA Cup Third Round five months later before playing a senior fixture again, when the Bluebirds drew with Carlisle before winning the replay.

The Third Round Replay was Coxe’s last senior appearance for Cardiff and marked his only win of the season in three outings, but could next line up in Sky Blue with Man City ready to move on their long-standing interest.

Pep Guardiola had sent scouts to observe Coxe several times throughout the season and were willing to wait for the 6ft prospect to become a free agent before making a move, which is now expected to beat out interest from Cheltenham Town.

Will Coxe make it at the Etihad Stadium?

While a move to City is expected for Coxe, it is anticipated that the right-back will be sent out on loan for the 2020/21 season and could join one of the Citizens’ sister clubs New York City, Melbourne City and Girona to gain valuable experience.

City sent ten first-team players out on loan around Europe for the 2019/20 campaign to mixed success, with Arijanet Muric making just five appearances for Nottingham Forest, Patrick Roberts making four appearances for Norwich then 11 for Middlesbrough, Pedro Porro making 15 outings for Real Valladolid, Aleix Garcia making 25 appearances for Royal Excel Mouscron, Ante Palaversa making 20 outings for KV Oostende, Ryotaro Meshino appearing 21 times for Heart of Midlothian, Zack Steffen earning 18 appearances with Fortuna Dusseldorf, Philippe Sandler given minutes in 11 games for RSC Anderlecht, Tosin Adarabioyo featuring in 35 games for Blackburn Rovers and Angelino appearing 16 times for RB Leipzig.

Failing to impress whilst out on loan could spell a quick end to Coxe’s Man City career, as Garcia was allowed to leave the Citizens at the end of the 19/20 season and is now on the hunt for a new side as a free agent.
