Report: Man City scouting left-back with 22 months on contract, 22 y/o impressing in Argentina

Benjamin Mendy has been suspended by Manchester City as he awaits trial over alleged rape and sexual assault, leaving  Pep Guardiola with Joao Cancelo in a makeshift role and Oleksandr Zinchenko providing cover at left-back.

City could bring in a replacement for Mendy over the summer and TNT Sports (h/t Sport Witness) say they’re showing an interest in Nicolas Fernandez Marcau who’s deal is up in December 2023.

The 22-year-old has risen through the youth ranks to San Lorenzo’s first-team and has gone on to make 24 appearances in all competitions, scoring two goals.

Fernandez Mercau has impressed at the Estadio Pedro Bidegain and is now a regular under Pedro Troglio, so City are now scouting the Argentine ahead of a potential approach over the summer.

TNT Sports aren’t sure whether the 22-year-old would feature under Guardiola in the future or be a City Football Group player, however. Cancelo has made the left-back spot his own at the Etihad while Zinchenko has proven himself to be an able deputy, so it could be argued that the Sky Blues don’t need another defender.

If Fernandez Mercau isn’t deemed good enough for City, he should be able to find a home among the City Football Group – New York City, Melbourne City, Yokohama F. Marinos, Montevideo City Torque, Girona FC, Sichuan Jiuniu, Mumbai City FC, Lommel SK and Esperance Sportive Troyes Aube Champagne (ESTAC).
