Manchester City released Sergio Aguero last summer but failed to sign Harry Kane from Tottenham Hotspur as his replacement. The decision to sell Ferran Torres to Barcelona has left Pep Guardiola short of natural centre-forwards, so the Sky Blues are expected to bring in a striker ahead of next season.
Erling Haaland is believed to be a transfer target and David Ornstein of The Athletic has addressed whether City could return for Kane this summer. He says it’s ‘unclear’ whether the Premier League champions will ‘reignite their interest’ due to Spurs’ insistence on keeping him.
The 28-year-old has two-and-a-half years remaining on his deal at Tottenham, so he’ll be 31 years of age when his contract is up. If Daniel Levy fails to budge on his £150m asking price for Kane, it doesn’t appear City will get their man. Haaland is available for €75m (£62.5m) and has 80 goals in 79 games for Borussia Dortmund, so he’d be a good alternative.
Kane has scored 238 goals in 370 games for Tottenham and boasts 17 goals from 34 games this season, so he would replace Aguero’s goals. City just have to weigh up the pros and cons of paying so much for a soon-to-be 29-year-old.
