Report: Man City ‘would be delighted’ to sign £81m man, new manager could thwart attempt

Manchester City have Rodri, Fernandinho, Ilkay Gundogan and Kevin De Bruyne who can operate in midfield, but El Nacional say they’re interested in Barcelona’s Frenkie De Jong.

The 24-year-old’s future at the Camp Nou was uncertain due as he’s struggled for consistency, but Xavi’s recent appointment as manager could mean he stays until the new manager’s cast an eye over him.

De Jong joined the Catalans on a six-year deal from Ajax in 2019 and has gone on to make 106 appearances in all competitions, scoring nine goals with 14 assists.

The Netherlands international has made two assists in 13 games across the board in 2021/22, so he remains a regular despite his apparrest dwindling form, but Xavi won’t let De Jong go until he’s seen the midfielder up close.

Whether the 24-year-old would be sold just one year into his stay at Barca remains to be seen too. He’s got great potential and is still well-liked at the club, so City might be barking up the wrong tree.

Barca paid £65m to sign De Jong and the Netherlands midfielder is now valued at £81m, so he’d by the Sky Blues second most expensive signing.
