Midfield is one position Manchester City don’t need to immediately strengthen in the transfer market this summer, but Portuguese outlet A Bola (h/t Sport Witness) say the Premier League leaders have been linked with Matheus Nunes.
The 23-year-old joined Sporting from Estoril in 2019 and has gone on to make 93 appearances in all competitions, scoring six goals with eight assists. And although Nunes has four years left on his deal, A Bola say he ‘dreams’ of joining City after rejecting interest from Newcastle United and Wolverhampton Wanderers.
Pep Guardiola has enough creative midfielders with Bernardo Silva, Phil Foden, Kevin De Bruyne and Ilkay Gundogan. He also has enough defensive-minded midfielders with Fernandinho and Rodri, but Nunes may be a long-term replacement for Fernandinho.
The 36-year-old now plays a supporting role but could be kept on another year if he signs a contract extension, so time will tell what Guardiola ends up doing.
Nunes has made 28 Liga Nos appearances this season, scoring two goals, making two assists, having 25 interceptions, making 37 tackles, completing 67 successful dribbles and creating 18 chances.
A Bola say the Brazilian-born Portuguese international wants to join a side capable of winning titles, so that will give City the edge in negotiations.
