Report says Gareth Southgate will start Man City defender v Wales

Kyle Walker didn’t feature in England’s first two World Cup group games but could be in line to start their final outing against Wales. Matt Law of the Telegraph says the 32-year-old should get the nod from Gareth Southgate, but it remains to be seen in what role.

England v Wales: What will the outcome be?

Wales to win

Vital Man City predicted Kieran Trippier would be rested after he underperformed in England’s 0-0 draw with USA, so Walker is an option at right-back. Southgate has used the Manchester City defender as a third centre-back too, however, so he might be alongside Harry Maguire and John Stones.

Walker hasn’t made an England appearance since September’s Nations League draw with Germany. The 32-year-old was ruled out of their 6-2 win over Iran due to lack of fitness and was an unused substitute in the 0-0 draw with USA.

Walker declared himself fit to play against USA, citing that he had been training for a couple of weeks, so he should be more than ready to face Wales.

Nearly two months on the sidelines after undergoing surgery on a groin injury will likely mean Walker is rusty, however, so Tuesday night’s game will be much-needed match fitness.
