Although Pep Guardiola has two left-footed defenders in Nathan Ake and Aymeric Laporte, let alone five overall in John Stones, Ruben Dias and Manuel Akanji, reports in Italy are linking Manchester City with another centre-back.
FC Inter News say Guardiola ‘considers’ Alessandro Bastoni ‘ideal’ and wants to battle Tottenham Hotspur to procure his signature despite having too many players in his position.
It’s already hard enough for Pep to rotate his squad so every player can get minutes on the pitch this season, so he wouldn’t add to his troubles with another defender.
Bastoni joined Inter Milan from Atalanta in 2017 and has gone on to make 134 appearances in all competitions, scoring three goals with 12 assists. This season, the 23-year-old has played in 16 games across the board and made three assists.
He’s mostly a regular for his country too, playing in eight of their last 11 internationals, so Bastoni is a talented defender whose career is going in the right direction. And if Guardiola didn’t already have two left-footers in his squad, maybe he’d want the Italian.
But a move for Bastoni makes little sense unless an existing player is sold.
