Kalvin Phillips made his Champions League debut on Tuesday night’ coming off the bench in the second half of Manchester City’s 4-0 win over Sevilla. The 26-year-old replaced Rodri in the 77th minute and put in a good performance that will please Pep Guardiola.

Phillips’ start to life at the Etihad has been difficult. He’s had to be patient for playing time due to stiff competition from Rodri and fitness woes, but his showing against Sevilla will do him the world of good. He had a 100% record from 14 passes and a 100% record from his five attempted long balls while looking comfortable despite the time out injured.

The England international was unlikely to walk into the starting eleven upon his summer arrival from Leeds United, but he would have hoped for more opportunities than he’s had – Phillips has made just two appearances in all competitions, amassing 13 minutes of playing time.
He came off the bench late in City’s 2-0 win over West Ham United (August 7), missed their 4-0 win over Bournemouth (August 13) due to injury, was an unused substitute in their 3-3 draw with Newcastle United (August 21) and missed their 4-2 win over Crystal Palace (August 27), 6-0 win over Nottingham Forest (August 31) and 1-1 draw with Aston Villa (September 3) due to injury.
Phillips will hope to build on Tuesday’s positive showing, but it remains to be seen when Guardiola will give him a start in midfield.
