Reyna’s International Farewell

City midfielder and current USA national team captain is set to end his international football career, which saw him feature in four world cups and notch up over 100 caps; a record that any player would be proud of.

Reyna played a part in last night’s 2 – 1 World Cup defeat by Ghana, which saw the USA crash out of the competition, but it was not the way he would have wanted to end his international career, being at fault Ghana’s first goal and injuring his knee in the process, and although he tried to continue, he had to be replaced shortly before half-time.

Now City fans are well used to Claudio’s injuries. Last season was yet another dogged by a variety of problems that kept him out of the team for much of the campaign. The previous seasons were pretty similar too, and now at 32, one wonders whether it’s time for Claudio to pack it in completely before he risks serious long-term damage.

City too will need to consider Reyna’s role in the squad and what he can realistically contribute, as we suffered badly from paper-thin midfield cover last season, something that was a major reason for our ignominious descent down the table after a promising start. Dabo’s recent arrival will at last increase the competition for a traditionally weak area, and not before time.

Let’s hope Claudio does make a swift recovery from this latest set-back, but I fear this may be one bad injury too far.
Maybe a return to his native USA could be on the cards sooner rather than later ?
